I like my Sketchers but I love my Gucci Mules

Ok, let me be honest here; I don’t actually own Sketchers. I just wanted to use this quote. However, I did just purchase my first pair of designer shoes.

Deciding to purchase my first pair of designer shoes was actually a really hard decision for me. I knew when I graduated that I wanted the Gucci Princetown Mules and the Chanel Two-Tone Slingback Pumps. Since the Chanel pumps are a little harder to get my hands on, I decided that the Gucci mules would be my first designer purchase.

Some people gave me shit for buying a pair of designer shoes. I know, I know. Part of what I’m paying is a price to say that I’m wearing Gucci. But I also really wanted these shoes.

So why did I decide on this pair and how did I save up for them?

Good question. First off, I love mules. I’ve worn them almost every day since my junior year of college. I bought a pair in the Nordstrom sale last year and I actually wore them down. Turns out, wearing the same pair of shoes 4-5 times per week will really wear them down. When I looked in the shoe, I was pretty disappointed that the leather was wearing and the soles were coming up. They’ve probably got a few more wears in them, but they were seriously a wardrobe staple.

So, I already knew that if I bought a pair of classic mules, they would be another wardrobe staple. Since I loved the look of the Gucci Princetown Mule, I knew this pair could be a staple as well.

Now, I’m also going to work in accounting. Accounting has a pretty conservative dress code (i.e. no sky-high heels) but it can still be pretty relaxed. Closed-toe mules would be perfect for a conservative office in a warm environment (a.k.a. Arizona). Now that I own these, I can wear them every day to work if I wanted to.

When I purchased these, I actually wasn’t working full-time yet. Granted, I have no student debt and I had a guaranteed after graduation, so money wasn’t as big of a concern to me as it is to many other recent grads. At the time, I was making extra income from my blog and I was able to save about half of each collaboration payment to save up for these shoes. So maybe the key to saving up for designer shoes is having multiple streams of income (which you should have anyway, take it from an accountant)!

I can say these shoes were worth the splurge for me. A lot of others say the same thing, but ultimately it comes down to what you wear each day and if you can fit them into your lifestyle.

It’s amazing how many people think expensive clothes purchases are stupid, and yet will go and buy new snowboards or new rims for their car. It’s just a matter of what is important to you, and to me (and obviously you too!) that includes designer or more expensive clothes! I love your shoes and they would be perfect for the office!
