Turquoise: A Southwest Fashion Staple

Thank you to JTV for sponsoring this post! It’s brands like these that keep this website up and running! I was paid for this post and received JTV jewelry pieces as compensation.

If there is one stone that encompasses desert style, it’s turquoise. In the US, Turquoise can be found mainly in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, California, Nevada, Virginia, and Utah. So, I guess it makes sense that we love turquoise out here. So, for those of you looking to rock a thousand-year-old trend, I’m here to show you how I style Turquoise jewelry.

A little bit about Turquoise:

Turquoise is actually one of the world’s oldest gemstones and turquoise jewelry has been around for thousands of years! Maybe, part of what makes this trend so fun is that turquoise jewelry has really transcended generations. The Southwest Native Americans called turquoise “chalichihuiti,” or sky stone, which is a pretty cool name in my opinion. It’s considered a sacred stone for health, happiness and protection and we could always use some more of that good juju.

Turquoise also takes millions of years to form and, because of this, every turquoise piece you get will be unique. Depending on the stone’s mix of copper and iron, the stone may appear more blue or green. The dark markings in turquoise, called the matrix, are from the rock that the turquoise formed in. When these stones are cut, some of the matrix remains. Matrix color varies because turquoise can form in different types of rock.

How I style it:

I’ve been a fan of turquoise jewelry for a long time. I even remember the first time my dad brought me home my first turquoise jewelry of my own. Now that turquoise is trending, it’s my time to shine.

Statement jewelry is one of my favorite trends and, in my opinion, it’s the best way to rock turquoise. I’m wearing two turquoise rings, one bracelet, and some smaller hoop earrings and together, they’re hard to miss.

Although you can style turquoise with anything, I love how it stands out with my vintage wash jeans and a black blouse. The Southwestern inspiration in the pieces also matched perfectly to my belt to give this look a little Arizona flair. I tend to prefer that my turquoise pieces fall more in the range of blue tones, rather than green tones, and my favorite ring (pictured below) even has a little speck of coral to compliment the blue.

When I think of turquoise, I think of boho-inspired styles with long layered necklaces, stacked rings, or fun bracelets. So, when I styled this outfit, I had the same things in mind. In the end, this outfit turned out perfect, even if it wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. The statement rings looked perfect together and the hoops were perfect without any necklaces to distract from them.

Where to get it:

I’ve been searching for the perfect vintage-looking Southwest-inspired turquoise pieces for a while now. When I first started looking, I was shocked at some of the prices of my favorite pieces. I mean, these things were vintage and selling for upwards of $200? Not in my book.

Just a few months later, almost as if by fate, I found out that JTV carries a wide assortment of gorgeous turquoise pieces that fall within any budget!

What I’m wearing:

Southwest Style Turquoise and Coral Statement Ring: This is my favorite turquoise piece! I love how the turquoise looks next to the coral and the natural shape of the stone. It’s a fun statement ring that catches everyone’s eye.

Turquoise Oval Sliding Bracelet: Although this bracelet isn’t technically a statement piece on it’s own, it adds the perfect touch to any bracelet stack. It would also make the perfect, subtle pop of color in a more simple look.

Southwest Style Round Tuquoise Statement Ring: This ring is like the epitome of what I think of when I think of a Southwest Style Turquoise statement ring. And how could I not have one of those in my collection?

Turquoise Hoop Earrings: I’m a big fan of hoop earrings. Turquoise and hoop earrings together? Yes please.

So tell me, how do you style turquoise jewelry? Are you thinking of adding some new turquoise pieces to your jewelry box?

I’ve never really owned much turquoise and I honestly don’t know why. I’m not the biggest fan of popping bright colors, but I think the turquoise would be a great accessory against my skin tone!! You look stunning, and this makes me believe I need more turquoise in my collection! xx
