How to Grow Your Own Garden in an Apartment

Sometime in Quarantine, I got really into plants. It was a zero-to-thirty-seven plant journey for me in just a matter of short weeks. I think it really started when I moved to my new one-bedroom apartment. Feeling like my decor was a little sterile, I started searching the internet for home plants that didn’t require a ton of care. Thankfully, all my devices were listening to me or reading my mind, and targeted ads began showing up on my Instagram stories.

My Home Garden Essentials

Bloomscape

I began my journey with ordering one snake plant (or a ‘moonshine sansevieria’) from Bloomscape. It was reasonably priced, could thrive in my north-facing low light apartment, and didn’t require much maintenance. Seemed like a perfect fit for me.

After my first plant from here, I found myself quickly ordering a prickly pear cactus for my patio as well.

Get Urban Leaf

This is when things got really interesting. I wanted to grow something I could actually use. My first thought? Herbs.

I’m not quite sure how I discovered Urban Leaf, but after searching the internet for enough ‘herbs that could grow indoors’, I stumbled across this brand. They sepcialized in beginning gardening kits (a must) and apartment growing (also a must). With a green-thumb guarantee, which basically meant I could get a refund or new seeds if it didn’t work out, I figured I had nothing to lose.

We specialize in apartment and beginner-friendly edible gardening kits. Our goal is to differentiate ourselves based on affordability, ease of use, and thoughtfulness of design.

There’s something a bit more nerve-wracking about growing plants from seeds, but I was ready to give it a try. The herb starter kit came with everything I needed for 8 herbs (the herb seed pack gives you 10 packs of seeds, but not the soil starters and label sticks).

The seeds starting growing almost right away. After the growth slowed, probably due to my low-light north-facing apartment, I decided to take the plunge on a grow light and plant stand to get things going a little more.

I’ve since graduated from the herb starter kit (8 herbs) to an additional 5 types of basil, rosemary, and a vegetable and fruit starter kit, bringing me to a total of 17 plants grown from seed. I haven’t been able to actually harvest anything yet, but the plants are now well on they’re way to growing to a mature size.

I’ve linked them above at Amazon, but they are cheaper on their website!

Lettuce Grow

Ok, so at this point, I’m chilling with 19 plants: 17 edible plants and herbs, mostly just sprouting and some planted together, and 2 decorative plants. What has come over me at this point, no one knows. But of course, targeted ads at their finest connected me to the Lettuce Grow Farmstand, a hydroponic gardening system.

Am I over-the-top at this point? Yeah, definitely. Who needs a whole gardening system on her small patio? But with a new lockdown coming across the country, boredom sweeping through my apartment, and a weird desire to actually grow something, I took the plunge.

I ordered the 18-plant Farmstand along with 18 plants that were chosen for me based on my zip code and what could grow in this current season. The seedlings arrive already somewhat planted, so you basically just need to put them in your Farmstand garden and let it do it’s thing.

That’s been my plant journey so far. Nothing’s been eaten from my home garden yet, but stay tuned. I don’t think this is a phase.
