If you’re a regular reader of the blog, you may have read my recent post about finding my way in Denver. I moved here in late 2024 and turned 30 just a few months after making the big move. Honestly, it doesn’t quite feel real that I’ve gone around the sun thirty times. Now: thirty-one.
My 30th was a bit of a rough time in my life, not because of the age, but just because I was in a serious transition period. This year, I got my redemption. I went to an amazing show surrounded by some of the best people I’ve met in the last year. Also, in true Kirsten fashion, I had to make my birthday dress myself.
The Pattern:
I decided to make this V-neck mini dress from Transformations by Tracy. It’s designed for 4-way stretch fabric, and I wanted something both fun and hot. This dress caught my eye for the fabric I had in mind.
While I love the dress, I have to admit it rides up a lot. Maybe that’s just how I dance, maybe I made the dress slightly too small, maybe it’s the fabric… but I definitely recommend wearing a pair of shorts underneath. The dress did look amazing on my chest, which is really saying something for having a solid pair of Gs.
I sewed the entire thing with a serger, and I would probably only recommend this project if you have one or if you are very, very adept at a good zig-zag stitch.
One thing to note is this pattern does not include written instructions; just a YouTube tutorial!
Sizes: 00-14 (I made a size 10)
Fabric requirements: 2 yards of 4-way stretch fabric for both the dress and lining. I used some old black spandex from Blue Moon Fabrics and 2 yards of gorgeous purple velvet from SewBo.
Sewing Level: Confident Beginner
The Styling:
I paired this dress with an old purple pashmina from my collection and my favorite knee-high Doc Martens. I used some gold accessories as well: a gold belt, a gold body chain, and some long gold earrings.
Catch me wearing this dress around the next party that calls for something just a little sexy. And if you’re turning 30 and worried about it, I just keep getting hotter.
