These sustainable boots were made for walking

I can’t remember when I stumbled on Nisolo for the first time. I just remember seeing their shoes, seeing that they were actually cute, and then seeing they also focused on sustainability and ethical practices… It was a no-brainer for me.

I now own 3 pairs of shoes from Nisolo: a pair of black flatform sandals, white leather sneakers, and white ankle boots. While I like my sneakers and sandals, I love my ankle boots. In the week I got them, I must have worn them at least 6/7 nights that week. I paired them with overalls, I’ve worn them with dresses, and this outfit might be my favorite of all.

These faux leather shorts were also a hit when I got them (enough that I got them in both colors). I paired them with a loose patterned button down I bought back in 2019 and loved that the cream color in the top matched the bone colored boots.

What sets Nisolo apart?

Nisolo focuses on sustainability and ethical practices throughout their business process. They are by no means perfect, but their company was created with those values in mind.

Sustinability Facts Label

In fact – they’ve recently launched their sustinability facts label to push for greater transparency in the fashion industry. This focuses on three pillars: people, the planet, and greenwashing.

For a general overview, I’ve talked before on how Fashion is one of the most pollutive and exploitative industries on the planet. Many workers aren’t paid a living wage (less than 5% make enough to cover basic needs), it’s a top 5 polluting industry (and accounts for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions), and brands are often guilty of greenwashing (promoting sustinable practices without actually making impactful changes) in order to appeal to consumers.

This facts label looks a lot like a nutrition label you might find on food and scores the product across these 3 pillars with 10 separate categories like wages, employee safety, and carbon emissions. It’s pretty cool what they put into it and I highly encourage potential customers to check out what they are doing.

Shoe Reclamation Program

They also offer a shoe reclamation program in partnership with Soles4Souls. Basically, to combat the excessive amount of landfill waste that fast fashion has created, they collect your used shoes (for a discount on a new pair). These pairs will be given to micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries, enabling them to clean, repair and resell the shoes in their communities. You will receive a $40 discount code toward your next Nisolo purchase of $125+. This highlights Nisolo’s commitment to a more circular fashion model.

So – if you’re looking for a new pair of boots, I can’t recommend this sustinable brand enough. You’ll have a quality pair of classic shoes that last a long time and you can help support a company that’s paving the way for more accountability and transparency in the fashion industry.

It’s a start.
