The Perfect Beginner Friendly Project: The Saturday Skirt

An easy peasy skirt pattern for showing off your favorite, drapey apparel fabrics!

I’ve been sewing for about a year now, and I’ve had my eye on this pattern from Friday Pattern Company almost the entire time. It’s the Saturday Set: a pattern that includes both a tie-front crop top and a midi skirt. If there is one thing about me, it’s that I love a good matching set.

I haven’t sewn the top yet, but when I saw this fabric at SewBo, I knew I wanted to create a simple skirt that would showcase the gorgeous print. I finally bit the bullet and purchased the Saturday set to sew the skirt.

Pattern Overview:

Designer: Friday Pattern Company

Size Range: XS/0 – 7X/32 (32”/81cm -60”/152cm chest); I made a size large!

Fabric Recommendations: The Saturday Skirt Set is designed for light to mid-weight woven fabrics. It looks great in rayon, silk, linen, and dress-weight cotton. Fabric needs to be 54-60” [137-153cm] wide to be suitable in all sizes. (From the designer’s website)

Fabric and Yardage:

My selection: Rayon Cupid’s Garden Fond – Love Struck – Art Gallery Fabrics

Yardage: 2.5 Yards (only 2.1 was required, but I purchased a bit extra)

Fit and Sizing:

I made a size large in this skirt. Generally, as a size 8/10, I can fall somewhere in the range of large and medium. I was right on the cusp of the M and L sizes so, since I wanted a little extra drape, I opted to sew the size Large.

This skirt fits my hips very well, however, if I make this skirt again, I think I will slightly shorten the elastic waist on the back so it fits my waist just a teeny bit tighter.

Construction and Notes:

One of my favorite things about Friday Pattern Company is that most (if not all) of their patterns come with YouTube Sew-a-longs!

I didn’t reference the instructions very much and instead referenced this video for the duration of my project.

Final Thoughts:

My pockets on the skirt are flaring slightly, which probably could have been prevented by stay-stitching, something I will definitely be incorporating next time. As I mentioned earlier, I’ll probably shorten the elastic waist band at the back by maybe an inch or two and lastly, I might incorporate just a small strip of interfacing to give the skirt waistband just a little more structure.

Other than that, I love this skirt and it’s such a quick and easy project that I know I’ll be pulling it out again and again.

I’m a sucker for a cute, unique skirt, so I love pairing it with a simple turtleneck or chunky sweater in the winter and a solid black or white crop top in the summer!
