My Fashion New Year’s Resolutions

I’ve never been big on New Year’s resolutions. Sure, starting off the year on the right foot sounds great, but any time is a great time to start a new habit. That being said, I’ve made plenty before; from working out to eating healthy to cutting my spending, I’ve tried quite a few.

I got my eating and fitness routine pretty much locked down last year (although my routine took a hit when I came down with COVID), I’ve been trying get a better grasp on my personal style and clear out my closet for the last few years. So – this year – I decided to create a few resolutions centered around my new style, maintaining a more streamlined and less cluttered closet, and cutting back on my spending.

Purchasing less

Overall, the biggest thing I want to change is my spending habits. I need to purchase less and focus on wearing what I already have. I used to be better at this, but every once in a while, my acquiring habits definitely get larger than they should.

I don’t want to purchase more than once a month if possible and focus on only adding items that I don’t already have. (No more white button-downs for me.)

Clearing out Old Styles

Part of the reason my wardrobe is so large is that I have a hard time getting rid of anything. Seriously.

I have items from high school and even more from college. And while that might sound good (I mean, wearing a piece for 7+ years is a good ROI for clothing), my style has changed and evolved so much over the years. I used to dress to hide my body, which really changed once I started working out. Since graduating, I can tell my style is much more evolved and it simply doens’t make sense to keep the styles I used to love but no longer wear.

Supporting Slow Fashion

I’ve been doing this already for years, but I want to be more intentional about it this year. I want to move the majority of my purchases to secondhand and start incorporating more of my own handknit pieces (talk about slow fashion).

I cut out a lot of companies like H&M, Forever 21, Express, and more, but I still remain a Nordstrom junkie, which can have just as negative of an effect. My friend Dani and I went thrifting just the other day and I loved it! I cleared out a bunch of old items for cash and was able to snag a vintage Coach purse, a plaid flannel, and a few cute tops and scarves for about $100.

Creating a Capsule Wardrobe

I love buying essentric pieces. However, that often means I’m missing staple items. I need to build a better capsule wardrobe and build the rest of my closet around that.

I recently purchased a few bodysuits to build up my “basic” wardrobe since I love the look of layering over tank tops and mock neck tops. I’d love to replace some of my tees with basic tees and get a few additional colors to fully build out the layerable part of my closet.

That’s pretty much it for me. Cut back on the spending and make sure what I’m purchasing will fully round out a closet that matches my personal, unique style. Whatever kind of resolutions you made, I’d love to hear them!
