How to build a Back-To-School Capsule Wardrobe

When it comes to going back to school, my favorite thing to look forward to was – of course – a new wardrobe.  And I know – you don’t need a whole new wardrobe every single school year, but it’s definitely fun to reinvent your style with the new year. Even if you don’t need a new wardrobe, it’s a great idea to replace those worn-out staples in your closet while the sales are hot – Kohl’s is even having a $10 off $50 purchase Back to School offer from 8/2-8/18 (and can be used on all SO apparel)!

When building a capsule wardrobe for the school year, you want to think about things that are versatile – those things you can appropriately wear to class and then out with friends on a weeknight or weekend!

3-4 Basic Tees

I wore a lot of tee shirts in college – I paired them with skirts, shorts, jeans, jackets, everything. I mean, tee shirts really are the backbone of a student wardrobe. I’d recommend picking up a handful in neutral colors like black ,gray and white, and maybe a few in fun colors like red or yellow!

I absolutely loved this plain white pocket tee and yellow ribbed mock neck top from SO clothing! I can totally see this yellow top being a staple in a fall wardrobe under denim jackets, with cardigans, and more! And – you really can’t go wrong with a plain white tee.

Lounge Essentials

If you’re going to be in the dorms, cute loungewear is a must. I loved this versatile henley paired with these ribbed shorts! The SO brand shorts are so soft and perfect for hanging out in the dorm room common areas.

And for the chillier days – a cozy hoodie is a must!

Wear it Everywhere Denim

I didn’t wear a ton of shorts in college, at least not on class days, mainly because our classroom AC was so high! I preferred to wear denim or dresses and bring a jacket to throw on when I got chilly.

I have a good few pairs of denim jeans in my rotation, but you can never go wrong with solid skinny jeans. They go with everything! SO brand offers a lot of different fit and washes at Kohl’s!

I’m pictured wearing a size 7 and I usually fit in a 6/28.

A White Button Down

A definite “must-have” in my wardrobe is my collection of white button-downs. I loved this soft, simple one from SO brand and it looks great layered too.

A Fall Jacket

Half hoodie and half jacket? Count me in.

A lightweight jacket is a must for fall and preferably in a neutral color that you can layer over anything.

A Knit Cardigan

Cardigans are an essential for a fall BTS wardrobe. I picked out a SO brand cardigan in a beautiful burgundy color. It has a great knit texture land is the perfect fall layering piece. It looks just as cute layered over tees as it does over dresses or belted with a jumper!

A Simple Dress

The finishing touch on a BTS wardrobe? The perfect dress. I love simple dresses in black and white that can be dressed up with cute accessories and outerwear! Just look at how perfect this white summer dress transitions to fall with a cardigan.

Which outfit is your favorite?

I’m a sucker for layered fall looks; I’ll be wearing cardigans all fall long. Which pieces do you need to build the perfect back-to-school capsule wardrobe?

When you’re building your BTS capsule wardrobe, make sure you check out Kohl’s and SO Clothing! Plus – they’ve got great deals (like $10 off $50 BTS purchase)! Happy shopping!
