Sustainable Brand Review: Farm Rio

Farm Rio has exploded in popularity seemingly overnight. Here's my take on this bright, sustainable brand.

I first stumbled across Farm Rio when perusing a Nordstrom. With all the brightly colored clothing on a single rack, I couldn’t pass up trying on the cute set that caught my eye. While I ended up walking away from a purchase that day, I didn’t hesitate when I saw this silky scarf top in store a few weeks ago.

Farm Rio has been around for a few years but the brand started popping up everywhere I looked, seemingly overnight. Was it a result of really good targeted ads or did the brand just explode in popularity?

About Farm Rio

We are a group of creatives from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that believe in the existence of happiness. More than a brand, we create enlightened cultural movements since 1997. Based in good energies and beautiful frequencies: We believe that solar rays enlighten the soul. We believe in all colors and shapes that nature brings to our eyes, to our feelings. We believe in local culture, and we keep it alive. We believe in quality, we adore details, and the emotions created by these elements, because a powerful product inspires positive transformations in everyone and everywhere. We also believe in hugs, or in Portuguese – we believe in “abraços”. And once we believe, we are. Just like that. Welcome to our magic, and feel it in your soul.

About, FarmRio.com

Farm Rio’s brand is nature-focused with collections in fun patterns and bright colors. The 100% carbon-neutral company boasts a 74-page sustainability report and has currently planted over half a million trees. With the rising consumer interest in sustainable fashion, it’s no surprise that a brand like this started gaining traction. (From their 2020 sustainability report, they actually grew revenues by over 200% from 2019 to 2020. So, the overnight popularity didn’t just happen in my head.) in But how sustainable are they really?

Farm Rio’s Sustainability

Good on You rates Farm Rio as ‘Not Good Enough‘ with an update as of March 2022. With the brand’s focus on sustainability, I read through the sustainability report to learn more. Notably, the only available report was from 2020, now almost two full years ago.

Right now, Farm Rio is 100% carbon-neutral, which is a good start. In 2019, they began planting trees for each purchase in 2019 and has now planted just over 650,000 trees. It’s important to note that they partner with One Tree Planted and that organization actually handles the whole gardening aspect. From reading the sustainability report, Farm Rio first introduced Carbon Neutral collections for the Summer 2021. When it comes to materials, they do use organic cotton, recycled materials, and less water than competitors.

While not a ton of current information is available, Farm Rio says the right things. Personally, I’d like to see a clearer, more recent sustainability report to feel comfortable with all the data.

About the clothes

I’ve tried on a few pieces from the brand and, overall, I’d say it runs a bit small. I’m wearing a large in this bandana top and I typically reach for a large in other pieces.

The materials feel high quality and seem like they will stand up to wear and tear. The fabric is thick, which also generally means it doesn’t stretch much.

At the end of the day, Farm Rio is doing more than a lot of other brands. I’m not sure how much lasting power the bright colors and loose, flowy silhouettes have in terms of current trends, but if it makes you happy – go for it.

The brand will always feel like a vacation-happy brand, perfect for tropical getaways or summer break. Obviously, I encourage wearing what you love all the time, but vacation style hasn’t changed much in the last decade. I’ll be pairing this top with high rise denim, linen pants, or maybe some flare jeans for a fun look. Crop tops are a bit like my calling card, so you’ll be seeing a lot of this top in the future.
